Re:      International Youth Olympics 2012 (June 13 – 17) in the United Kingdom; seeking Durham NC youth under age 15 to travel to England as ambassador athletes (http://www.london2012.com/olympic-torch-relay)
From:  Dr. Wynn Cherry of Sister Cities of Durham ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )

As you know, the Olympics will be held in London, England during the summer of 2012.  Durham, UK has issued an invitation to its sister cities around the world (including us-- Durham, NC) to participate in an International Youth Olympics event. This is a unique opportunity and Sister Cities of Durham plans to send a team of young athletes from Durham, NC to compete on the world stage and to be ambassadors of global friendship.

We trust you can help us find young athletes (under age 15) from this area who are eligible and eager to compete and who, more importantly, would be good ambassadors of our city and our nation. It is critical that our ambassador athletes embody the spirit of the Olympics and interact with other young international athletes in a positive way.

We also expect our young athletes to report on their experiences to Sister Cities of Durham during and after their trip. Participants may be asked to keep a blog or speak to civic groups about their experiences.

Please download the details, application (due Nov. 10, 2011), and schedule which are posted on www.sistercities-durham.org. We invite you to distribute the application to qualified and interested youth. For athletics (track and field), 12 boys and 12 girls will be selected. For swimming, 6 boys and 6 girls will be selected. For gymnastics, 2 boys and 2 girls will be selected. For fencing, 1 boy and 1 girl will be selected. Selections for the Durham, NC team will be made by an Advisory Council, which includes former USA Olympic Committee members. Sister Cities of Durham will follow up with students and inform them of next steps in the process.  Later this fall we will host an informational meeting.

If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Cherry of Sister Cities of Durham at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Thank you.
